Sequence of events: * Corey calls Bab5 * Corey says, oops can't host Bab5 * No one says anything on the mailing list * Josh: It's Thursday at 6pm. I need to invoke the Bab5 emergency response plan! I will host. * Uh oh, looks like the Bab5 list is broken. |

Pirates!
Stolen from patrissimo: An-arrgh-chy: The Law and Economics of Pirate Organization: This paper investigates the internal governance institutions of violent criminal enterprise by examining the law, economics, and organization of pirates. To effectively organize their banditry, pirates required mechanisms to prevent internal predation, minimize crew conflict, and maximize piratical profit. I argue that pirates devised two institutions for this purpose. First, I analyze the system of piratical checks and balances that crews used to constrain captain predation. Second, I examine how pirates used democratic constitutions to minimize contact and create piratical law and order. Remarkably, pirates adopted both of these institutions before the United States or England. Pirate governance created sufficient order and cooperation to make pirates one of the most sophisticated and successful criminal organizations in history. Great title for an econ paper. |

iPhoto suckage
So I recently bought a MacBook Pro. I must have had pretty high expectations, because I didn't expect there to be so many UI flaws. Not to mention the outright bugs. There is a long list, but I've most recently been messing with iPhoto. How many ways do we need to organize photos? - rolls

traffic school quotes
(Fleeing a police officer now carries a minimum sentence of not more than 1 year in jail.) Negligence to secure any passenger under 16 years of age is especially enforced. Alcohol can enhance some of the dangerous side effects of many drugs. Any drug (and the law does not distinguish between prescription, over-the-counter, and illegal drugs) that impairs your driving is illegal. I think the second one is particularly impressive. |

Looking for pictures
I'd like to have a vote on what facial hair I should settle on. If you have some recent pictures of my face, could you send me a pointer? Thanks! |

Back!
I just finished 2 weeks of vacation, including my annual backpacking trip (pictures will be forthcoming after I get things setup), my mom's birthday, and Burning Man. I decided not to take pictures for my first Burning Man so that I could focus on enjoying the experience, not worrying about where my camera was and that it was being destroyed by playa dust. Anyway, I'll post more on this later but I haven't even finished cleaning my gear yet. Not to mention a million LJ posts. |

Cool UI
(found on SlashDot) Fold n' DropFor drag 'n drop to a covered window. The video shows it has a nice tactile feel. |

I'm supposed to post about going to college reunions and a very cool wedding. Maybe later. Anybody out there want to help me make some T-shirts? I'd like 8 copies of a design that says "Hell on Wheel" and incorporates a unicycle. Including juggling torches would be a plus. Price negotiable. |

Bab5 at my place this Thursday
The Bab5 mailing-list seems to be down. E-mail me if you don't know what this means or you have a question about it. Note: David also was going to host, but I've talked to him and we've settled on my place. |
